Meet Mike

Mike Steinmeyer is a husband, father, grandfather, Navy veteran, former city council member, and Missouri State Representative. A native of Sugar Creek and a graduate of William Chrisman High School, Mike’s life has taken him around the world, but his roots have always remained in the communities of eastern Jackson County. His experiences in the military, mission work, business, local government, and the Missouri House have shaped his practical, community-first approach to public service.

Family & Community First

Mike lives in Sugar Creek with his wife, Kana. He and Kana have three adult children and three grandchildren. Being there for family is the most important thing for Mike, whether it’s moving to help take care of his mother, or helping his daughter’s family in their battle with rare pediatric cancer.Growing up in our community, Mike learned the importance of responsibility, compassion, working through difficult decisions, and planning for the next generation. Those values guide how he approaches his work as our State Representative.

A Commitment to Service

Mike is a veteran of the United States Navy, answering the call, and enlisting to serve his country.

Following his military service, Mike spent more than 15 years working in international missions. His work took him to 26 countries, where he helped build schools and worked to address hunger in underserved communities.

These experiences showed Mike that meaningful service begins by listening, understanding what people need, and working alongside them to find practical solutions.

Experienced Perspective

Mike earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oral Roberts University. In addition to his mission work, Mike has worked in real estate and as a sales manager and trainer in Los Angeles and Kansas City.

From 2020 through 2023, Mike represented Independence’s Third District on the Independence City Council. In 2024, voters elected him to represent District 20 in the Missouri House.

In the House, Mike serves on committees responsible for the state budget, public safety, health and mental-health services, local government, utilities, and the legislative process. He also chairs the Subcommittee on Appropriations for Public Safety, Corrections, Transportation, and Revenue.

This combination of mission work, military, professional, local-government, and legislative experience gives Mike a broad understanding of how decisions are made, conflicting needs are met, and how to bring real solutions to the table.

Focused on District 20

For Mike, representing District 20 is a year-round responsibility that extends beyond the limited time the state legislature is in session.

He regularly meets with residents, educators, first responders, business owners, local officials, trade unions, and community organizations to hear what is working, where help is needed, and how the state can better support the district.

Whether he is working in Jefferson City or meeting with people at home, Mike’s focus remains the same: making sure Independence, Sugar Creek, and the surrounding communities are heard and receive the attention and resources they deserve.
